So I was sitting in traffic on my way to work due to the never-ending construction. As I sat at the light, I could see that one of the construction workers was a high school friend named Johnny. I honked, said a quick hello, and then the light changed, so I had to keep it moving.
Johnny messaged me a few minutes later saying that I caught the eye of one of his coworkers and wanted to know if I was interested in meeting the guy. I asked him to send a picture of his coworker before I could give the green light and Johnny obliged. His coworker was kind of cute, but I didn’t like his hair [not a deal-breaker], so I told him that he could arrange for us to connect. The plan was for his Johnny and the coworker to bring me lunch from the nearby sandwich shop [Johnny’s idea…not mine] and we’d take it from there. I gave Johnny my order and when the clock struck 12:30pm, I made my way to meet them outside of my building for a formal introduction.
When I arrived, Johnny was alone. I asked what happened to his coworker and he said that the coworker didn’t want to meet me because he thought he looked scruffy. [Dude, you’re working construction, so that’s kind of the norm…I’m not tripping.] I told Johnny I wasn’t bothered by that, but the coworker wasn’t feeling it. [Well that sucks!!!]
Anyway, while Johnny and I were talking, another one of his coworkers walked up, some older guy in his mid to late 50’s or so, to ask him a question. Johnny introduced us, but because I have a sh*tty memory and our interaction was so brief, I instantly forgot his name. Johnny had to get back to work, so I thanked him for my food and went back to my office to eat.
He messaged me a few minutes later apologizing that his coworker didn’t come through, but asked if it was ok to give his coworker, that he later referred to as Carl, my phone number. I was hesitant at first because he wouldn’t meet me as planned, but gave him the benefit of the doubt because I understood that he wanted to make a good first impression. I told Johnny to give him my number [especially since he appeared to clean up nicely based on the pictures I saw].
We texted for a bit and I asked him why he was acting shy, but Carl claimed that he wasn’t shy at all. [Oh really?] I decided to call his bluff and told him to “PROVE IT” by inviting him to video chat with me at that very moment. To my surprise, Carl was open to the idea and called me right away. I hit the accept video button on my phone after a couple of rings because I needed to do a brief primping and that’s when my eyes received a not so pleasant surprise….the old dude was at the other end of the video chat. [WHAT THE F***!?]
THIS DATE IS OVER!
On everything, I swore Carl was the initial coworker Johnny and I discussed, but I was VERY VERY wrong. I hoped it was all an April Fool’s joke (in October), but Carl was indeed the old ass dude. [I CANNOT!] My smile turned into an instant frown during the video chat because I was just in absolute shock. There was a lot of blinking and awkward silence on my end, so I decided to end the call to collect my thoughts. I didn’t have the heart to tell Carl that a) I didn’t find him remotely attractive and b) I thought I was talking to someone else.
I called Johnny to give him a piece of my mind asking him why the hell he pulled a bait and switch on me and why he was passing me around to his coworkers like a damn blunt. He thought I knew who Carl was since he introduced us when we were talking outside and he figured I wasn’t interested in his first coworker that chickened out on meeting me. [WHY THE F*** WOULD I BE INTERESTED IN THIS AARP CARD CARRYING OLD ASS MAN JOHNNY? HE’S NOT EVEN A HOT OLD MAN….HE’S NO GEORGE CLOONEY! SMH]
I gotta some new friends and to start paying better attention.
Per Johnny’s advice, I blocked Carl and that was the end of that.
Sincerely,
No More Hookups For Me!
How would you have handled this situation? Would you have told Carl that you didn’t find him attractive or that you thought you were talking to someone else? Would you still be friends with Johnny?
