So I was on a dating app and came across the profile of this tall, attractive guy. We were the same age [bonus] and he didn’t have kids [JACKPOT!!]. Fortunately, it was a mutual match and that we both swiped right. [Let’s get this love thing popping!]
We exchanged numbers, but kept missing each other’s calls. We finally got a chance to talk a few days later and the conversation began with us sharing our backgrounds. He told me where he grew up and it just so happened to be in the same city. [WOW! What a coincidence?] Then he went on to discuss his current job and shared that he was looking for a relationship….something long-term. [How sweet!] I wanted to backtrack for a brief moment because I figured we might know some of the same people since we were the same age and grew up in the same city.
Me: Hey! It’s so amazing that we’re from the same city, yet our paths never crossed until now. We probably know some of the same people.
Him: Yeah, we probably do.
Me: Where did you attend high school?
Him: I went to Evans High.
Me: For real? No way! I don’t recall you at all and it’s not like you wouldn’t have stood out since you’re so tall.
Him: Yeah, I used to hang with [insert names of unfamiliar people].
Me: *scratches head* I don’t know any of those people at all. Did you graduate early, transfer, or get kicked out or something? Night school? When did you leave Evans?
Him: Nah. I graduated in 92.
Me: 92? 92? How is it that you graduated in 1992, but your profile says you’re 36? Something’s not adding up.
Him: Oh that’s not my real age.
This Date Is Over!
At that moment, I was completely turned off because I couldn’t fathom why an adult male would lie about something as trivial as his age. It also made me wonder what else he was hiding. A whole family perhaps? We got into an instant argument because I thought that was the dumbest sh** I’d ever heard. [How are you damn near 50 faking like you’re in your 30s? That’s just DUMB!] He said he didn’t post his real age because “it’s not that serious” and that he didn’t take the app too seriously. [What a freakin’ genius!] He also said that I should be grateful that he told me his real age and that I didn’t have to wait to find out a few months down the line. [Man, shut up!]
He still tries to reach out to me, but I have since ignored his messages because I don’t want anything to do with him.
Sincerely,
Am I Overreacting?
How would you have handled this situation? Did she overreact? Would this turn you off? Is men lying about their age the norm?
